Pro-Ject Vinyl Sandwich Platter Upgrade (Aluminium) The Pro-Ject Sandwich platter is an effective Pro-Ject turntable upgrade available either as aluminium with a vinyl layer or MDF with a vinyl layer. This upgrade will achieve specific sonic qualities for current, or older Pro-Ject turntables. Pro-Ject calls it a sandwich platter as it has an MDF or aluminium core faced on top with a 5mm layer of vinyl. This matt-finished vinyl playing surface includes a slight recess at the centre to clear the label area, so even with discs where the label or a surrounding ridge stands proud, the underside of the disc should still make good contact with the vinyl platter surface right across the playing area. To our ears, the aluminium model improves clarity and dynamics .

With the vinyl/aluminium sandwich platter upgrade, Pro-Ject have come up with a really simple, but effective, improvement to the standard offering. At first I was skeptical, but after trying it out for awhile I must say that it does add something sweet to the mix. I found that it works best without an extra mat and with the vinyl top layer to the platter, there is no danger of damaging the record, especially if a weight or Michell clamp is used. Incidentally, if you use a clamp, it only works if you don't have a mat since the spindle is relatively short. The weight of the sandwich is more than I would expect for an aluminium platter but it certainly seems to be a high quality item and on my Debut 3 it works a treat. Priced well within the budget audiophile range I would expect Pro-Ject to be able to shift quite a few of these "sandwiches", so expect to see a lot of standard platters appearing on eBay!
