The Zoom RT-223 RhythmTrak Drum Machine can be the ultimate accessory for any musician or DJ. You can assign drum or bass sounds to the 13 velocity-sensitive pads to create your own original sound, and even adjust pitch, level, and panning to get exactly the sequence you want. The Zoom RT-223 already has 440 preset patterns with variations, but you can also record and save your own patterns to the drum machine. You can store up to 127 unique kits and up to 511 original drum patterns as well as up to 40 effects. The Zoom RT-223 interface is well labeled and can be easy to learn and use. Could have been so much better with a few more features and better documentation.
This review is for the drum machine only, as I don't use the bass part of the machine. The drum sounds and pads are very good. But because of a lack of features I can only use this to tap out a few bars of a basic beat and then let the machine play them into my Zoom R16 digital recorder. I then change the track tempo in an audio editor on my PC. I can not use it by itself to jam to, or record with, as I thought I would. Presently I play and record classic rock, blues, country, folk and pop songs. I need fairly simple beats (like a Charley Watts shuffle) in a few different time signatures to keep time to. The manual lists 439 presets but doesn't list the time signature of any of them. As far as I can tell all the prests are in 4/4 time. And it is not possible to change the time sig of any preset or even a copy of a preset to a user preset and then change the time sig. So if I want a 3/4 time track I have to tap it out using the pads. But I can only do this at 120bpm, because the metronome can't be muted, and it's louder than all the drums. and all the metronome tracks except the one basic 4/4 are complex beats that distract me from tapping out the beat I actually want. By using the basic 4/4 metronome at 40bpm I can make each beat of the metronome the one of a 120bpm 3/4 beat, or the one of a 160bpm 4/4, etc. Of 439 presets in 4/4 I find just about all of them unusable for the music I play. Lots of hip hop, beats, techno, dance, etc. but there are no simple beats, no simple shuffle, or ballad or blues beats. Every preset is complex and showy. The only way I can get usable simple beats is to tap them out myself. Luckily, that process is quick and easy to do, even though I am restricted to 120bpm for 3/4, etc. as explained above. The machine has 70 drum kits organized by genre. Unfortunately when you record a loop by tapping it out, you are restricted to a single kit of 13 instruments. If you change a kit to add additional beats to your tapped out pattern, all of the previous instruments change to the new kit. So if you start off with a rock kit, and want to add some instruments from a Latin kit into to the pattern you are tapping out, you cannot do it. You can create and store your own custom kits, but the manual has no listing of what instruments are in each kit. You would have to search through each of the kits, tap each of the 13 pads, to find the instrument number of the instrument you want to create a custom kit and store it. In the past I have made my own beats on my computer audio editing program from samples. This machine has shortened that process to tapping in a few bars, recording them for 15 minutes or so, then using the computer to set the correct tempo.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Very easy to program - small with good drum sounds
The number on this listing was wrong - the Zoom drum machine pictured is the RT-123. This drum machine is very easy to figure out and has great features for such a small unit: big variety of good drum AND bass sounds, ability to quantize high for natural feel, TWO drum sets available simultaneously for all self-programmed rhythms (kits and percussion), 99 user programmable rhythms, foot pedal functions, able to write rhythms with multiple bars, song and loop functions, step, tap and/or copy from the 298 supplied rhythms to program. All in all an excellent value, as I've found all my Zoom products to be. The only criticism I have is that I think Zoom wastes too much memory on the pre-set rhythms, with many of them being unusable because they are all only two bars longs (so too repetitive), or in styles you don't want or need. It would have been better to give us more user programmable memory and fewer pre-sets. That is a minor criticism, though and I guess hip-hop composers might like a lot of the pre-set rhythms. Anyway, get one - you can write much better rhythms than most keyboards give you and it's a great practice aid for any player.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
