Conversion to 00 Gauge
These older level crossings are excellent and extremely durable. To convert to 00 gauge for Hornby/Bachmann etc... a little easy work will produce a great level crossing. First put a strip of balsa wood in the gap. The take a straight piece of track and trim sleeper back with rail cutters, or sharp scissors. Paint balsa wood grey, add thin glue to green area and sprinkle foliage onto the glue. This simple trick improves the level crossing out of recognition. Paint the sandy coloured area grey and add small size ballast, make sure it does not inhibit the opening of the gates. Alternately just add some glue to the sandy coloured areas and cover with magnesium ballast, this too will look effective. Paint gates white and the centre with fresh red. Glue single track to balsa wood, carefully with painted card add centre crossing board in the centre. End product is a brilliant model of a level crossing. Only suitable for single track not double track, but still brilliant, difficult for children to break it.
