Excellent book. Lorie is such a good writer. The stories are great.
The history of Santa Clara is fascinating, as I have studied it for many years now, and Lorie's book is one of the most interesting, accurate, and extensive of all the books on Santa Clara.
She weaves stories of all the many individuals passing through Santa Clara during that era, (1852-2002), and draws the reader right into the narrative.
The city of Santa Clara has been a hub of activity since the Mission days of 1777 and a full "Californio" culture existed long before Los Angeles, Sacramento, Portland or Seattle were settled.
So the history is complex and Lorie describes it all so well.
Mission Santa Clara became Santa Clara College in the 1850's and the Jesuits established one of the finest scientific communities in the entire West all through the 19th and 20th centuries.
Lorie captures how Silicon Valley came to be, and all the changes that came with it, from farming and ranching to highways, housing, and computers.
