Very Good Value with Good Components

For the price, this radio works very well and has some very good components. The speaker sounds great, the analog tuner is nice and smooth, the antenna works quite well, and the volume knob and switch is smooth and responsive. Plastics aren't the best quality, but it's consistent and meets ISO9001 standards I just wish it came with the option to plug in a power adapter, which it clearly used to as the mold shows, the circuitry just wasn't built in. I would also really like a 3.5mm audio out, in case I want to use headphones or output to a speaker. Maybe these features could be included in a premium model that comes with a power adapter and uses better quality plastics or even metal for the speaker grill and frame.

    It is what it is…

Radio has Great Sound! That’s the best I can say. The radio overloads easily and that over load creates images on the FM band. It is quite sensitive, however the overload issue is a problem on FM. The frequency markers on the dial are off quite a bit. AM is okay, same with SW band. Both bands hear local or powerful station well. Construction is poor, thin plastic and loose screws and noisy volume control and band-switch. The external antennas is cheap and breaks easily. Aside from its short comings, when you tune a station in..it stays there. No noticeable drift. Very good audio with moderate fold-over at high levels. It’s not a good portable radio…but sit it on a shelf and it will provide good entertainment. It is what it is, a $25 radio for casual listening entertainment.

  • It's ok, but there are cheaper radios better than this.

FM is ok, AM band is not very selective, you can hear strong stations across half the dial. Shortwave band is drowned out by strong FM signals when the antenna is extended (?). Speaking of the antenna, it broke the first time I extended it. And the radio is battery operated only, for $25 I would have expected AC power as well. Speaker and audio is the only strong point on this radio. I would have given 3 stars if the price was lower, like $15.

  • 5Core AM FM SW Portable radio has SW section that does not work well

Everything works great on AM and FM. The AM Broadcast Band 530 Khz to 1650 Khz was extremely sensitive to long distance reception, but the SW band does not work well at all. The set suffers from harmonic interference problems from adjacent AM and FM stations which are close to my neighborhood. There is little or no rejection of these stations across the SW dial. The AM and FM sections are great, being able to pick up DX fringe stations. Other than the SW issue, the radio physically is built well, simple to use, and seems sturdy. It would have been nice to have had 120v option in place of 220v, a plug for a useful AC adapter, and an earphone jack none of which were there. But since it was from a developing country, I did not expect those items. I wanted a unit that the average Indian family would have in their home. Because the broadcast band reception was so good, and the only problem was the SW out of band signal rejection problem, as well as being reasonably priced with no charge for shipping, I am keeping it anyway.

  • Very good reception

First off, this radio does extremely well on weak AM (MW) stations. The sound is surprisingly good. FM is even better. The 10cm speaker makes a difference. The radio is clearly set for DX at the expense of selectivity and rejection. Not a problem where I live, just the opposite. Short Wave works quite well, to my surprise. So, to the things I don't like. One screw was missing, three plastic bosses to hold the screws inside the case we're broken. Nothing I couldn't glue back in, but this seems to be a common problem. I'd recommend it, especially if you're in an area where reception is difficult.

  • Fun radio

If you want to experience the fun of portable radio listening, much like how it was in the 80's before small radios turned into what they are today (bad sounding junk that can't stay tuned to a station for more then 5 minutes), this is a good choice. The FM band does a decent job of picking up local stations, the speaker used in the radio has a very nice clear and crisp sound (not tinny or distorted). Mid range/voice is very clear and pleasant to listen to. Even with the batteries, It's light weight and very easy to grab on the go, fun for taking into the back yard.

  • Own a piece of history.... Maybe the last portable with analog tuning. Sounds good on AM

Own a piece of history... This may be one of the last manufactured low cost portable radios to have Analog tuning. Newer designs use digital tuning methods. Especially on medium wave AM, this set with its Indian made 4" speaker sounds much better than other similar sized low cost portables. The radio is actually marked T 22. not TC-22

  • Poor AM reception

I bought one of these after seeing a very favorable review by a popular YouTube influencer whose opinions I trust and respect. The radio I received isn't as good as the one he received, unfortunately. FM reception is OK but not great, and AM reception is poor: I'm only able to pick up 3 stations whose transmitters are within 10 miles of where I live. Those 3 local stations did sound quite good on this radio, almost as good as FM. But my other AM/FM radios can pick up many more stations, some of them 50 to 100 miles away. That's the kind of AM reception I was hoping the 5core radio would deliver, but unfortunately it did not.

  • Cheap looks good sounds good

The manufacture of the case is cheap at best. the inside is ok as the chip that is the heart of the radio is a Sony is works well. The fact that this is an analog tuner as compared to DSP tuner is why I got the radio. Over all I am satisfied. To some one who is interested in an analog radio I would recommend it.

  • Excellent reception in our area.

The reception was clear on both the AM and FM bands with easy and clear tuning. It was a good value, having better reception than any digital tuning radio our family has. Plan on buying a second radio having given the first to a family member who was unable to get reception on any of the digital tuning radios they had.
