  • Another great read from this author.

I love this author and have all her books. I bought this copy as a replacement; I gave my original copy to a friend. Takes a while to get into this one, but becomes more interesting as you read on. Chevalier researches every topic thoroughly and provides a reference list and explanation at the end of each book. To fully understand each topic she writes about, she becomes proficient at a particular skill or researches the history and provenance of an artefact to provide a compelling and most plausible account of the person or work of art she has chosen to write about. Looking forward to her next book.

  • You will find the reference to the title in the story.

A very satisfying read. Good period detail. I had forgotten just how different life was pre-war, for women. Not my usual read but I’m very glad my group chose it.

  • A fascinating insight into the world of a single woman in the 1930s

I found the book quite a slow starter, but was really glad I stuck with it. The research that went into it was astonishing and, given time, the characters all began to matter to me. It also explored and gave an insight into some of the attitudes of the era which (thankfully) society has moved on from.

  • Enjoyable read.

Fascinating story about the lot of "surplus" women at the end of WW1 - even more interesting if you are familiar with Winchester Cathedral.
