Product Information
How long should presidents be able to serve in office? How many terms should presidents be able to serve? What limits should be placed on the tenure of directly elected presidents? Currently, most countries restrict the time that presidents can serve in office. For example, US presidents can serve for only two four-year terms before they have to step down. In democracies, these rules are complied with. In other regimes, though, very often they are not. In autocracies and personalist regimes, presidents often abolish term limits, or find creative ways of avoiding them. This book examines the politics of presidential term limits. It looks at the theory and practice of term limits, the experience of term-limit avoidance in all parts of the world, and the consequences of presidential term limits in all forms of regimes.Product Identifiers
