A Zinnemann film
I watched it but never stopped wondering why it got 3 Oscars in 1977 for Best picture, Best Director and Best Actress with such a bad story line directorial and atrocious acting .... I guess that year the others must have been worse - very disappointing ....

I saw this film some years ago and It sill grips me as it did then. The friendship between the two characters from childhood to adulthood is deeply moving and something rarely encountered. I had hoped there were subtitles as I am had of hearing and especially the american accent is difficult for me to understand, but it doesn't distract from the enjoyment of watching this gem.

The True Story of Julia, narrated by her best childhood friend, Lilian.
Lillian Hellman was able to tell us in the novel she wrote, about the friendship she had between her friend Dashiell, and Julia. One was the love of her life, the other was her childhood friend. Dashiell instil in her confidence and strength to be a successful writer. He praised her for the amazing story she wrote. She loved him a lot as a result of that. The subject of her novel is her childhood best friend Julia. She was impressed by the way of thinking Julia had and also by her beauty. In spite of being rich, she didn't like wealth, and only thought about the unprivileged of this world and how to help them. Julia grandparents lived in a mesmerizing Castle with a lot of servants. Her mother lived in another Castle in Scotland, and she had a lot of wealthy friends. Julia's parents were divorced. Julia went to study Medicine in Austria, at the breakout of the Second World War, after studying in Oxford. Julia was ostracized by her family, because she was so very different of them. Julia while studying in Vienna, was attacked at the University and broke one of the legs. In the meantime Lilian went to visit her in Austria at the Hospital. During her stay in Vienna, she was lodged in one of the best Hotels in town, and Julia’s friends paid everything to her. Lilian in the meantime finished her novel and went to Paris to celebrate this event among other successful writers like her. While in Paris, she decided to go to Russia. She wanted to visit the most fascinating Theatre in town, the Bolshoi also she loved this country I suppose. Julia was aware of her friend sojourns in Paris, and of her intentions of going to Russia. As a consequence of that, she sent one of her poor acquaintances to the posh Hotel, where Lilian was staying, and he invited her to go to the “Luxembourg’s garden". There he asked Lilian for going to Russia through Berlin, by train, and not by plane. She was taking to Julia a lot of money hidden in a hat. She agreed to travel by train to Russia, but the journey was full of tension, because the Nazis were controlling all train stations. Fortunately Julia had asked to a lot of people to help Lilian along the way up till she got to Berlin. When she arrived to Berlin, after being questioned why she was visiting the town, she managed to pass through the border control, for being a writer and she told the controller that she was going to write what her impressions of Berlin were. In Berlin, after a brief encounter with Julia in a Café, she gave her the hat carrying the money for rescuing political dissidents, Jews, Gypsies and so on. She also told Julia she had a baby in a bakery in Switzerland and that she loved her looking after it. After attending a play in Bolshoi in Moscow, when Lilian arrived to her Hotel bedroom, she received a message, saying that her friend Julia had been murdered by the Nazis. Lilian went to identify the body, and returned to England. In England she tried to get hold of Julia’s grandparents, but in vain. They refused to meet with Lilian and pretended not to know her. Lilian went to the Alsace looking for Julia’s baby, but she was unable to find the baby. She decided to go back to her friend’s Dashiels’ house and to live with him. She lived on and off with him, up till he died. She like her both friends a lot, but in a different manner. One fulfilled her intellectually, the other was her childhood friend.

Friendship and a dangerous mission in 1930s Europe
This film was released in 1977 and starred Vanessa Redgrave as the titular Julia with Jane Fonda as her friend Lillian. The cast also includes Maximilian Schell and Jason Robards. It is fascinating drama about friendship, loyalty and the risk to one's personal safety in the late 1930s. The casting is superb and I would recommend this film highly.

Well worth watching
This film is not “entertaining”, but it is one of the few that conveys a faint impression of what itwas like to be an opponent of the Nazis during their regime. Convincingly drawn characters and superb acting make this a thought provoking reminder of the power of friendship and the value of liberal politics.
