Product Information
Russian director Sergei Eisenstein's hugely influential silent classic recreates, in documentary style, 1905's anti-Tsarist uprising by Russian sailors. The patience of the crew of the eponymous warship snaps when they are forced to eat rotten, maggot-infested rations. Some rebel against their superiors. The mutiny is quickly quelled. But, as they face the firing squad, the mutineers eloquently persuade their colleagues to join their cause rather than kill them. The uprising spreads to the port of Odessa, in which the Potemkin is docked. Tsarist forces are dispatched to stamp out the anarchy, but their opponents now have full charge of the battleship and its awesome firepower... Eisenstein's propaganda film not only remains a great watch, its impact has been felt down the years through the work of countless directors who have drawn inspiration from it; Brian De Palma's memorable sequence in The Untouchables involving a pram and the steps of Chicago's Union Station being just one example. The revolutionary nature of the film led to it being banned in many countries around the world; it took until 1954 for it to be seen as safe enough for a British general release, and even then it retained an X certificate until 1987. The Story of Film: An Odyssey, which charts the history of movies continues on More4 on Saturday evenings.Product Identifiers
