About this product

Product Information

Woodbine Willie was the affectionate nickname of the Reverend Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, an Anglican priest who volunteered as a chaplain on the Western Front during the First World War. Renowned for offering both spiritual support and cigarettes to injured and dying soldiers, he won the Military Cross for his reckless courage, running into No Man's Land to help the wounded in the middle of an attack. After the war, Kennedy was involved in the Industrial Christian Fellowship, and he wrote widely. This superb biography is based on original interviews with those who knew and loved him.

  • A Compassionate Account of a Passionate Soul

Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy (Woodbine Willie) was unique: a conservative churchman keen on the holy sacraments; a non-combattant who won a gallantry medal in the WW1 trenches; a man of the people, who cared deeply for social justice; an inspired orator who could hold an audience of thousands spellbound. The Bible teaches that "a man's gifts make room for him", and this was certainly the case with Kennedy, who became a household name at home and in the Commonwealth through the compassion and sheer passion of his soul. Bob Holman, recently deceased, also a compassionate activist and a man of the poor, writes readably and engagingly for a wide audience. I commend this book highly.

  • Story of a really Great Man !

Woodbine Willie preached at my local Church - St. Michael's Breaston. Derbyshire Armistice day Service in 1921. I have recently received a complete copy of his Sermon on that occassion.
