Quality Hand Rivet Tool
It seems like once every few years I need to purchase a rivet tool for some job. Most are stamped steel and pretty flimsy, and I suppose that is the reason they don't last long. I decided to try a nicer model this time. I recently installed a new engine in my 1985 Corvette. The new engine uses an Edelbrock Stealth Ram intake manifold which means I need to cut a hole in the hood for clearance. I decided to mold on a 1968 ZL1 style hood scoop to pay tribute to the Vette it was styled for. The scoop does not fit flush to the C4 hood so I located it then drilled my holes along the front edge of the scoop for the rivets. I then used fiberglass resin to bond the scoop. I installed the rivets on the front edge and it clamped the scoop down nicely. To finish attaching the scoop I would have to actually force the back and sides down. I held the scoop in position and drilled for the back rivets. After putting resin down to bond it I used the rivet tool to set the rear rivets. From here on in the rivets would be under pressure so I was not sure what to expect. The rivets all held and pulled the scoop down nicely to the hood. I think that much of this had to do with the quality of this rivet tool. Had it been the flimsy cheap ones I had used in the past I do not think that the rivets would have pulled the scoop down to where it needed to be, or that the rivets would have been set well enough to hold up to the pressure that the scoop produced due to my unorthodox method of installation.
