    Frustrated Squirrel

We have had many bird feeders that claimed to be squirrel proof or resistant and eventually they got in. Not this one. We watch with much laughter the frustration the little guys have had trying to get in. The would fall off, go back and fall off again. They have finally given up and now take the pickings from the ground. It looks good, works as it should and holds plenty of seed. We love it. There are two little negatives. The enclosed pole sent with the feeder is very flimsy and as we did, we would recommend a more solid set up. Second the hood is not sufficient enough to protect from a driving rain, so the seed gets wet in the feeder portion. Our feeder is at eye level, so it is easy to remove the wet seed and let the dry seed come down. NOT a problem... We still give it a five star rating. We have plenty of birds coming and going all day. Once in a while a frustrated squirrel comes along and attempts to get an easy meal, but finds out it is not worth the trouble.

    Squirrels eat windows

Hello: Strengths: 1: I had two of these for 20+ years. On last move I left them at the old place. 2. They are made well and are galvanized under the paint. The old ones are still going strong. However are a little rough looking where the squirrels have eaten the paint off trying to get in. 3. The treadle works well for keeping the squirrels out for the most part. They will hang and pull seed out but do not get much and do not stay and empty the feeder. So the birds do have a chance to come in. 4. A bear pulled mine over, popped the top and ate about 1/2 the seed. It was easy to replace the single broken section of tubing, just removed it and made the unit one section shorter. The top was slightly bent and easily popped back into working shape. Weaknesses: 1. After about 5 years the pole rusts off at the ground, First time i just removed that section. Second time I used a Black iron pipe. 2. The one pictured and the ones I had did not have plastic windows. I do not know what they were thinking, but any self respecting squirrel will eat through those windows in a jiffy. When that happens with the 2 new ones I just purchased (yes I was disappointed they had windows) I will have to put sheet metal in to replace them. Or could do glass, if so inclinded. The metal tabs should allow this. 3. Raccoons like to hang from the pole and rock the treadle opened and pull one seed out at a time. One hears the treadle clunk repeatedly. They eventually pull the feed divider out and dump lots of seed on the ground, then eat what they feel like and leave. The divider bends back and pops back in fine. If you can find it. One was missing for a month or so, but finally showed up under the mulch. The big problem with the raccoons is their weight. Eventually they bend the bracket on the bottom of the feeder, I had to reinforce this after many years. I found greasing the pole (petroleum jelly) kept them off. However they got really made and tore up the bushes next to the feeders. 4. I use black oil seed and my feeders were post mounted. The hole for the hanging wire was big enough for the squirrels to pull seed out of. I fixed this by place a bolt in. Oh and yes the squirrels popped the partially stamped out metal filling the holes. 6. Deer do not get any seed, but bite the wooden treadle off. I replace mine with threaded rod with rubber tubing over it. I see replacement metal perches are now offered. =Over all these are good units except for the windows. Dah ! Best Regards, john

  • Hanging bar isn't centered, so it won't stay level. It tips forward.

The feeder is supposed to be either hung up, or mounted on the pole which is included. But the hanging bar sits on the back side of the feeder rather than coming through the top of the roof, and the feeder will not stay level. It keeps tipping forward. When it does this, the bar behind the perch closes off the bird seed so that the birds cannot get to it. Otherwise it would be a well-constructed feeder. I like the metal material and the fact that it's easy to open and fill. I wanted to hang it on the deck so I could watch the birds from the window. But I suppose I will have to dig a hole whenever our frozen ground thaws out and put the feeder on a pole further out in the yard. I'm disappointed. With a better design, this could have earned 5 stars.

  • The finest durable feeder I have found

The Woodlink #7533 is most likely the finest there is as far as durable squirrel proof bird feeders are made. These are the kind of feeders used in state parks, and federal wildlife preservation lands. I have been feeding birds since my youth, and to this date, this feeder model is more advantagious than any other that I have found. It is very recommended. Mark Middleton -

  • Great technology for birds and against squirrels.

Installation is simplified above concrete in instructions, if you purchase an 18" length of 1 1/4" od ss pipe and drive it into the wet ground. A swizzle stick or two for permanent shims around the white sleeve and you have fast and sound installation allowing you to rotate the feeder. Highly recommend; great value and product!

  • No squirrels here

While I have other bird feeders that the squirrels can access, this one is exclusively for birds. It is large and holds a huge amount of seeds, so you don't have to stock it constantly. The perch his weighted, so if a creature that weighs more than a bird tries to feed, the mechanism closes off the holes through which the seeds pass. You can set the weight based on the heaviest birds you have (4 oz. for doves, for example.). The feeder is metal and very well-constructed. The pole is kind of thin and can cause some wobbling even if put in the ground at the suggested depth. But it's not a major concern. Either anchor it better or put it in a bit deeper. The vendor was excellent and answered my question immediately. Overall, one of the best products I've purchased online since online began.

  • Great Feeder

Sturdy, pretty effective in screening out those unwanted visitors to your feeder. It can be adjusted to accommodate larger birds, if you want, but still screen out those furry visitors.

  • VERY STURDY WITH GOOD ADJUSTMENT ABILITY!!!

This sturdy bird feeder holds a LOT of seeds and the mechanism for deciding which weight of bird to include/exclude is much better than spring-action bird feeders. The "eaves" hang over far enough the shield the feeder from moisture and the birds seem to like it very much!
