Catalogue No R4419. Hornby Pullman Third Class Parlour 12-wheel car in full Pullman livery with grey roof. Includes alternative couplers in accessories bag. Original box which is in good condition.
This is a lovely passenger carriage from a sadly bygone era when when passenger comfort was seen as important.
The bodywork clearly shows its matchboard construction, which means that the lower portion of the carriage sides were built with individual planks of wood - rather than the smooth metal that was used on later designs of Pullman trains.
A nice touch is that the table lamps actually illuminate, albeit with what look like yellow LED lights rather than warm white.
By having six wheel bogies there might be some restrictions of the track geometry the carriage can negotiate - especially over sharply curved tracks. I have not tested it for this.
My only niggle is that one of the tables is too far over to one side of the window, instead of being in the middle. Quite why Hornby designed the seating unit in this way is a mystery - maybe it is correct for another item of Pullman rolling stock?
It's an impressive rake of Pullman cars especially behind a Bullied Pacific.
Unfortunately it is overpriced. The retail price was probably a lot less but their rarity has put a premium on them so a reasonable rake of 12 wheeled Pullman cars can cost upto £450. However they have NEM pockets and all have illuminated table lamps, and flush fitted windows. They come with the alternative Roco couplings for closer coupling which is very effective. A full rake of 12 wheel Pullman cars looks very good as I have discovered.
