  • Mediocre Godzilla Film

This is the second worst Godzilla film, as far as I'm concerned. (the worst being All Monsters Attack) The movie diverts from the usual Godzilla formula, and it does so in a bizarre way. It's got a late '60s/early '70s psychedelic vibe to it that doesn't fit Godzilla. It also tries to be more serious with its environmental warnings, which are warranted, more serious adult characters than we've seen in the few Godzilla films leading up to it and high body count. However, at the same time, you have a kid cheering for Godzilla the whole time. So, it seems to be a bit confused about who it's aimed at. The monster is hideous and the fight is just too long and drawn out. The music is one of the worst scores for a Godzilla film. One of the worst things is the weird editing, with things oddly spliced together and kids' drawings mixed in. It's bizarre. This was definitely the beginning of the end for the Showa era Godzilla films. But, it's still a Godzilla film and I love me some Godzilla. Having said all that, this Blu-Ray is a good product. Kraken Releasing did a great job on this disc. You get both the English and the Japanese audio tracks, and the Japanese track is fully subtitled. That's good, because it's a much more enjoyable viewing experience. The English voices don't match the characters and sound like they were recorded in a tunnel. I switched it with the Japanese audio after about two minutes of the English and it's much better. The main credits are still in English, though, as only the audio changes. And, the disc has the original Japanese theatrical trailer, which is a nice touch. All told, this is a good value for any Godzilla fan. While it's not necessarily the best film, it's still good to have in my collection.

  • Good retro sci-fi

Husband is a big fan of the old Godzilla movies. He loves the movies even though they did not have the best effects back then.
