    Easily achieved quality recordings

A brilliant and versatile machine which is relatively easy to use. I use direct connections from the mixer having created tracks on Cubase / Wavelab but there are a number of ways to connect to other sources. I tried to update the firmware but the instructions for downloading from the Zoom website are incorrect and I’ve not achieved it. The unit uses v 2.00 but v 2.10 (2020) is supposed to be available. It’s a fabulous unit. I used a Tascam similar model to this in the recent past but the quality of the Zoom recordings are vastly superior.

Zoom H5 kept crashing/freezing - Build quality and quality control issues

The H5 worked fine and without any issues for just over a month but then the crashing/freezing started to occur. When switching the H5 on it crashed/froze up. When attempting to record, the unit crashed/froze up. The H5 crashed when I put slight pressure on the case under the record button with my finger. The only way to reset the machine was to take out a battery and put it back. But the crashing/freezing kept happening intermittently. People have had similar issues of freezing/crashing with the Zoom H4N, which makes me think this is a quality control issue (a search on Google should reveal this). The H5 could have been a good sound recorder, as the sound quality recorded is good and it is easy to use when it works, but the build quality and quality control issues let it down for me.

  • A Samplers Right Arm

I bought samples from here there and everywhere only to come to the conclusion that they are being used by everybody. Make your own samples. Record what you want and then bend it in software. You get real satisfaction from this method.

  • Best recorder on the market.

I bought this to record my voice for voiceover. The great thing as well is that it acts as an interface. It has good pre-amps also. Good for starting out in VO or for use when travelling as a VO out of your studio. It's a very well built, sturdy device and simple to use. It also provides Phantom Power to your mics, not bad from a low voltage battery source!

  • Zoom H5 Audio Recorder

It is an extremely versatile and high quality recording device. Requires a little learning of the menu system but is not so difficult. Worth combining with an external battery pack but the 2x AA onboard will last for a couple of hours. Connects to PC better than Mac but can always just transfer the SD card but look after the access door.

  • Not my recorder.

Whilst the general recording system was fine, I found the menu system strange and very different from the H6. I had assumed it sould be siimilar. It was most baffling to set up for overdubbing, for instance. I struggled with it for a while, then sold it in preference to the H6 which is more familiar to me and more logical.

  • Great small sound recorder

Great piece of kit, easy to use. Good for interviews or out in the field recording atmos or ambient sounds for editing.

  • Nice machine

Rugged, quiet circuitry, versatile and still comes with a printed manual. Separate line and headphone outputs. Battery life seems good so far. Interchangeable microphones a neat idea solidly done. Wish I'd bought the deal with wired remote, dead cat and mains PSU for £20 more but didn't spot it until now. Other slight downside is USB is only v2.0 so big files can be slow to download by cable. Still very happy with this purchase and recording at 24bit 96kHz WAV regularly.
