As I decided to replace my front disks and pads I checked the Brake fluid reservoir and noticed it was like gravy as probably never been changed on the x type since new. And to be honest I have never really changed any brake fluid in any vehicle I have owned.
As this is expensive I flushed out the system with a good quality dotfor ISO4295 class four brake fluid and then bled through to each caliper using shell ESL. Bleeding on the X type was a challenge, I used a vacuum pump and brake syringe To try and back bleed but either device did not manage to suck or push fluid through. So I ended up doing the tried and tested way of one person pumping the pedal and the other person having a pipe in a container and locking and unlocking the bleed screw each time press of the pedal. The brakes on the X type excellent now they feel tighter no sponginess and more force with less effort required.
ISO4295 class 6 Is classed as a low viscosity fluid so your ABS pump will work at its maximum efficiency at low temperatures if it is required. Class 6 brake fluid is actually quite hard to get hold of I found and the closest is.5.1 which is a class five fluid.
Do not be tempted to use dot 5 brake fluid as this is a different concoction that does not hold water vapour which is why your brake fluid goes dark coloured as dot 5 cannot be mixed with Either dot 3 dot 4 or dot 5.1 brake fluid. this can make the brake fluid go jellified and Knackert up your brake system.
I needed one bottle 500 mL too bleed through to each caliper and the other bottle 500 mL to top up to the max mark on the reservoir.
