  • 50 litre oak barrel

Handsome enough to be an item of furniture. Put tap in, and filled barrel with water - no sign of leakage, so repeated and left for a couple of days - still no leakage. So, drained it and filled with home-made pear cider which had just finished fermenting in glass flagons. Two months on, and just drawn off the first pint. Tap worked a treat - no drips. Perry was lovely - still slightly cloudy, fresh, delicate taste extra to how it was when it went into the barrel. I'm now torn between showing off the barrel by sharing the perry with others, or keeping it hidden in my shed and consuming the lot myself.

  • New oak barrel looks to be OK we shall see what happens when i use it.

Its an oak barrel 10l capacity. It is not as pretty as the barrel in the photograph because the top and bottom bands were white painted and quite scuffed so it fails as a decorative item. I have yet to fill it so don't know whether it is liquid tight but it had better be for 70 quid. It seems well made and the accessories provided appear of decent quality but again it remains to be seen how well it fairs in use.

  • Ornamental only

Filled with water and still leaking after a week. No good if you fancy keeping something valuable in it. I think if you filled it to the top it would last about 30 days so you would need to drink it very quickly before it was completely empty. I repacked the wood tap with a chrome proper one. So at least looks better but it is never holding booze.

  • A tasty and well-made barrel.

A very good barrel for quick aging of spirits. Carefully made of properly aged Quercus robor oak (I beleive) and toasted to a moderate level inside, it finished off 10l of white whisky in two months (I wouldn't suggest longer for the first use) adding vanilla, sweetness and a little smoke without the raw wood-shop sawdust taste of oak chips. Stainless steel hoops, and carefully varnished (just the end-grain) to prevent leeching. Rinse the barrel out and fill with hot water as described. My barrel came wrapped in cling-film to maintain humidity until use. It sat unused for a month in my shed before use (not recommended), but still sealled up leak-free in minutes. The supplied wooden tap seals perfectly, and is preferred to brass (which may contain lead). The top bung weeps a bit when upside-down, just give it a good whack to seat it. I expect this barrel to last for many more fillings, gradually needing longer aging times to extract the essences from the wood before being reconditioned or relegated to long-term aging or dispensing.

  • Quality barrel

Nice looking barrel, well made, when filling for the first time two drips from the tap and that was it. Quick delivery so quite happy!

  • Great product, great price!

I was rather sceptical about the quality of the barrel before it arrived. However, I was delighted to see that it is beautifully made and works well. I’d definitely recommend it.
