ReviewsThe biographies included in this book demonstrate how a few enterprising individuals changed the way we eat. Some were high school dropouts and some were housewives and had little or no business experience. Then there are those who are college graduates. Others were exposed to the food industry, some were instant successes and there are those who failed in business many times. But the common thread that weaves these famous people together is their love of food and their dogged persistence to fulfill their dream. Margaret Rudkin was discouraged by others. Mrs. Fields was unable to get needed bank loans and had to have her husband cosign. A new business style was created by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. They made it company policy that 7.5% of their before tax profit would go to charity. Paul Newman took it a step further by establishing a company where 100% of the after tax profits would go to charity. It is also very clear that the age one starts a business is not a factor. Colonel Sanders was 66 years old when he started, Ray Kroc was 52 when he opened his first McDonald restaurant. W. K. Kellogg and Margaret Rudkin were in their forties when success came to them. If nothing else, these biographies show that there is no one way to be successful in business. If the hunger is there (no pun intended) a person can succeed. SynopsisToday, people everywhere know the tastes of foods like Hershey's Chocolate, Kellogg's Corn Flakes, and Mrs. Field's Cookies, but these names were not always so widespread, and the founders of these companies did not always have an easy time getting started. Through hard work, perseverance, and ingenuity, figures like Milton S. Hershey, W.K. Kellogg, Margaret Rudkin, Ray Kroc, Colonel Harland Sanders, Dave Thomas, Wally Amos, Debbi Fields, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, and Paul Newman turned homemade kitchen secrets into million and billion dollar corporations.
