I was pleased to see this movie finally released on DVD. Having struggled with alcohol addiction for many years, this story was very close to me on a personal basis. Though the timeline is dated, the message is timeless. Those who still struggle today may be given hope that the 12 step program which started so many years ago will still work today. It's great to see the story of how it began and its origins. This movie isn't "preachy" in its story line, but accurate and very true to life. This movie does a great job of taking Bill W (James Woods) from the beginning of his drinking career through the highs of his life to the depths and despair so many of us have experienced. The extra special features section of this dvd is worth having the dvd in your collection. It will be 3 years on October 31 (Halloween night) that I started my new life without alcohol and I do owe it in great part to the 12 step program of AA. See me at my store as I will always have a supply of these available. Sincerely-mrbillsmovieshopRead full review
I had seen this movie when it was first aired on the Hallmark Hall of Fame special. I figured it would be at least watchable because Hallmark specials are always well written and easy to follow. At the end of the movie not only was I glad as watched but, I was surprised that I learned a lot as well. Up until AA was started these people didn't have anywhere to go except the psychiatric ward in a hospital or jail. If these people did manage to quit drinking there was no place or people for them to follow up with and because a lot of them relapsed their families and friends gave up and turned their backs. Also with Prohibition, the depression I never realized how big alcoholic drinking was. The founding of AA within the first year and by word of mouth, the first chapter had more than a hundred members. It's easy to dismiss a person with a drinking problem but to see how someone who wants to stop drinking, how hard they work, it's literally a Godsend that AA was started and how today in the present it's stll as powerful in the present as it was in the past. An excellent made for TV movie. It has a strong appeal to anyone in the recovery community, particularly Alcoholics Anonymous. It arrived a couple days earlier than promised and it was in perfect condition.

My Name Is Bill W. is the story of AA's founders, Bill W. and "Dr. Bob" and (in my humble opinion), it is a must have for anyone who has experienced the Gift of Grace called "recovery" by way of Alcoholics Anonymous. It took me back to the 1930's and made the "Big Book" and its language come to life for me. I now have a MUCH greater appreciation of the AA's "Design for living", and realize for myself how one person simply helping another can grow into something miraculous. A must have for anyone who owes their life to the support and encouragement of AA and its members.
Great movie about one of the greatest people of all time. These are two of the best big screen (and small screen) actors, they couldn't have picked better people to play these roles. If you're interested in how one of the world's greatest organizations got it's start, or just interested in a story about a person that came back from near ruin to help himself and many, many others, this is the movie for you!
I purchased this DVD My name is Bill W. because i myself am a recovering alcoholic and wanted to more about the history of aa and our founding fathers. Upon watching this film i found it to be very informative and would highly recommend this to all my brothers and sisters who are recovering from this deadly disease. The acting in this film was excellent as well and could not have asked for more from this picture. 5 stars all the way. I would buy 2 copies one for me and one for a newcomer who might not have the funds to purchase. Thank you!
Good movie, priced a little high for a dvd that is twenty two years old now.

This is a great movie whether you are in recovery or not. I like to watch it just when I am having a low day as it helps me with my recovery. James Woods and James Garner do a GREAT job as Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob. I bought this particular one to replace one I had in the past and gave to someone that needed it to help her in her recovery process also. All in all this is a great story on the wonderful beginning of Alcoholics Anonymous...........
Second one I bought, being a member of " A Friend of Bill W." absolutely love this movie!
