The Greatest of the Great
George Szell’s Cleveland Orchestra Beethoven is, according to any critic, the best or certainly one of the best sets of the Beethoven Symphonies. I would call it the greatest because of its total perfection. This 24 bit remastered set is the one to get unless you can afford the Japanese SACD remastering, which is probably good, too, but this one takes the crown because of reasonable price and good sound. One of the best renditions of Beethoven's symphonies and overtures ever recorded.
Among the great conductors of the 20th century, George Szell was in a class by himself. An assiduously detail-oriented taskmaster and perfectionist, he held his Cleveland Orchestra musicians to the highest standards in the world - rivaled in his day only by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. His recordings of the great classics are characterized by abundant energy, vitality and unerring musicality. Fortunately, we can now have Szell's masterful interpretations on CD for bargain prices. No classical collection should be without Szell's Beethoven and Brahms symphonies, Richard Strauss tone poems, Wagner orchestral excerpts, Bruckner 8th Symphony, or his Dvorak Symphonies 7, 8, 9 and Slavonic Dances. They are all a delight to listen to, and they all still set the standard by which today's conductors are judged. For example, Szell makes the first notes of Beethoven's Symphony No.1 sound full of authority: this is the first symphonic utterance of a major composer! So unlike the comparatively delicate, even timid, approach of most other conductors. The sound on these CDs is very good, and has been boosted enough that all but the very softest passages can be well heard in the car while driving.
