Called to serve his country when fighting erupts on the eastern front, decorated officer Willhelm (Volker Bruch) races off to the battlefield alongside his nervous younger sibling Friedhelm (Tom Schilling). Meanwhile, hopeful that her true love Wilhelm will soon return to her, optimistic nurse Charlotte (Miriam Stein) opts to serve in the Red Cross. But the horrors Charlotte witnesses quickly erode her youthful idealism, and as her best friend Greta (Katharina Schuettler) aspires to become a famous singer, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor (Ludwig Trepte) attempts to survive by blending in with the Polish Resistance.

One cracking War film
"Generation War" ranks (in my opinion) on apar with other war films such as "Downfall," "Saving Private Ryan" and "Das Boat" ("The Boat") for historical accuracy in weapons and uniforms of the time, coupled with a story which includes believable characters, excellent filming, and direction which moves along at a fast pace with no boring parts. If you enjoy a really good war film, then I would recommend buying a copy at your earliest opportunity. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended, especially if you appreciate historical accuracy and good story telling.
Critically acclaimed and a commercial success immediately upon its first broadcast in Germany. It has been described as "Band of Brothers" from the perspective of the Germans. This mini-series has absolutely no similarity to the HBO show, other than the time period in which it set. The production standards are excellent. Several story threads follow the lives of a group of young friends finding their own way through the turmoil and tragedy of War. Excellent historical drama
Very much enjoyed this series when shown on tv. I found it very engaging and if watched as a historical fictional drama it is a great piece of work. If however , you are fussy about the improbability of some scenes and want to criticise the historical morality or accuracy in minute detail as some do then watch something else . Vivid portrayal of young Germans experiencing WWII first hand
This miniseries was shown on the BBC a few years ago so I wanted to revisit it on DVD. German production values are very high and this series is extremely vivid and shocking in places, so not for the faint-hearted!
