Bought this out of interest as this is Nancy Kwan's third movie (according to imdb). Her first, 'The World of Suzie Wong', where she plays a bar girl in Hong Kong, is superb (NB Also with a very stylish Sylvia Syms). Her second, 'The Flower Drum Song', playing a 'good-time' girl, but with also a lot of singing and dancing (she did train at the Royal Ballet School after all), is also great (Best sequence, practically in any musical: "I'm strictly a female ... female") But why "for goodness sake" (a phrase used often by Suzie) did Nancy Kwan agree to act in this turkey ? Of course she looks (and obviously is) 'oriental', and French Polynesia does have a quite large Chinese population, but Polynesian characteristics are quite different. However, I suppose in 1963 when this movie was released practically nobody in the UK had been to Polynesia so Nancy, as the naive 'Polynesian', was I guess quite a revelation. Polynesia does have different social structures to the West, e.g. family structures are more fluid, and the producers of this film knew about this, but exploited it as a bit of 1960s titillation, and little else. This film has little to recommend it, so my advice: Get 'The World of Suzie Wong'. Nancy looks fabulous in a cheongsam and much better than in this movie.Read full review
