He's a subtly inventive writer, however--crafting songs that seem to adhere to rock basics, but in fact employ deft rhythmic surprises. His high caliber guitar work and exceptional solos are positioned front and center in these songs. While he'd never be a session vocalist, his singing works well in the role he creates for it--and comparisons to J.J. Cale are not far off the mark (but where Cale presents a laidback rural attitude, Spedding's is wired and urban). Besides the great title track, the album also features a tune he penned with Marshall Crenshaw entitled "Hologram."
