Product Information
Josef von Sternberg's 1940s drama is based on a then-daring Broadway play that was set in a brothel. Mother Gin Sling runs a crooked casino in Shanghai, frequented by a variety of lowlife. When she hears that the owner of the property, Sir Guy Charteris, plans to close it down, Mother Gin Sling encourages his selfish daughter to gamble, and she soon runs up massive debts, while she is also seduced by Dr Omar. And Mother Gin Sling has another reason to hate Sir Guy, which becomes apparent at a climactic dinner on the casino's last night... The Hays Office (which enforced moral guidelines for the film industry) turned down 15 scripts for the film before finally accepting Sternberg's version, which he went on to direct. Sternberg transferred his action from a brothel to a casino, but it is still a delirious story of decadence and depravity.Product Identifiers
