For steering head bearings I've previously just used a big screwdriver and copper hammer and not had any issues but I thought I'd give this a go. Good job I did as once I stripped down the SFV650 I was working on there were no cutouts to accommodate a drift: it would have been difficult to get any purchase without a specialist tool. This is a simple tool but solid, well made and does the job well - hook the lip behind the race, tighten up and knock it out from behind. It won't pull blind bearings but as it says on the tin it's designed for steering heads.

A purposeful designed tool. with good durability to take copper mallet strikes. It has to be used with a drift, which is available separately. Or any suitable socket on an extension bar. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease I was able to extricate a stubborn inner roller bearing race that was blind recessed in the steering tube. A real cost effective tool to take away all the frustration from using the bodging hammer and chisel method.

I used this tool to remove the outer head/stem bearing races on my CBR600FV/3. It absolutely did the job! Of course, it's a 'special tool' so I may never use it again. You can use a homemade drift to do the job and save the expense but this tool makes the job a whole lot faster, easier and reduces the risk of damaging the bike's frame. I used a an offcut of steel bar to transmit the force from the hammer to the tool. Recommended.

I've bought specialist application tools before and been disappointed, so I was a little unsure if this would work or not. I'm pleased to say it did the job perfectly; I used two 1/2" ratchet extension bars and a large socket as a tool driver and the bearing race came out in seconds. Unless you work on motorcycles for a living, this won't be a tool you use often; when needed though, it will do the job for which it was intended.

This is a good piece of kit, well made and should do the job in most circumstances as long as your vehicle is not built to defeat an amateur mechanic (as my vintage Ducati clearly is). I will use this tool for many happy years to come so thanks.
