Super-glossy post-war technicolor drama at the court of Charles II
Super-glossy post-war technicolor historical drama, telling the story of a puritan country-girl, who uses her looks to escape to London, and rise from Newgate prison to be a countess and Charles II's mistress. Linda Darnell looks the part in a red wig, and delivers more vivacious energy than in Clemantine or Letter to 3 wives. George Sanders is, as always, first rate as a caddish world-weary monarch. However, Cornell Wilde's performance all but ruins the film. He is wooden, cold, and almost comatose as Darnell's true love.
