About this product

Product Information

One man's quest to save the bumblebee. **SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER** One man's quest to save the bumblebee... Dave Goulson has always been obsessed with wildlife, from his childhood menagerie of exotic pets and dabbling in experimental taxidermy to his groundbreaking research into the mysterious ways of the bumblebee and his mission to protect our rarest bees. Once commonly found in the marshes of Kent, the short-haired bumblebee is now extinct in the UK, but still exists in the wilds of New Zealand, descended from a few queen bees shipped over in the nineteenth century. A Sting in the Tale tells the story of Goulson's passionate drive to reintroduce it to its native land and contains groundbreaking research into these curious creatures, history's relationship with the bumblebee, the disastrous effects intensive farming has had on our bee populations and the potential dangers if we are to continue down this path.

  • Not what I thought it was

I thought it was an informative book on bumblebee s. It is the author s life with bees and many other things. Although it is written as a life’s story he tells you lots of information about bees habitat breeding how the farms used to be lots of small plots all with hedgerows making the boundary’s. With lots of different flowers for foraging bees. After world war 2 farms were opened up and fields are vast good for crops but not good for bees. They have no food or shelter. If a bee does not find nectar in 40 minutes it just runs out of power and dies. Very sad to hear but it all makes Seneca to me Now I am beginning to understand what we have done to our eco system.

  • How to encourage bumbles

We all need to be concerned about the significant decline in the bee population nation. Bees are vital pollinators for the production of fliers and vegetables. This decline is due to farming practices of using chemicals on produce loss of habitat and climate change. Dave Couldon sets out we can all do our bit even in small gardens to encourage pollinators particularly bumble bees
