My usual reading material is a combination of factual, science-based books ('A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson is probably the best of its kind) and crime novels (currently Rebus...). I have next to zero interest in history, and could barely name a single Henry VIII wife. Why did I buy this book? Because I heard Stephen Fry refer to Wolf Hall as 'amazing' or similar, so I thought I needed to expand my horizons a wee bit. Hilary Mantel was a new name to me, and I was blissfully unaware that she was flavour of the month, if not of the past few years. So it was that I ended up with, first, Wolf Hall and not Bring up the Bodies - its sequel. Both books are utterly compelling, and grip you from the start. Very much focussed on Tom Cromwell, Ms Mantel is clearly very sympathetic to him and is addressing what she considers to have been an imbalance in how he's usually painted by historians (as a scheming, ruthless individual out for himself). In Mantel's books, Cromwell is one of the few stable individuals, with a strong and power moral sense - he brings up his children in a relaxed, almost 'modern' style, to be taught right from wrong by example and not by punishment. He treats women as equals, to be respected. And he served his King and country in the best way he could. Yes, this involved a great deal of cunning and sometimes ruthlessness, but always 'justified' in his mind. Wonderful writing style - instantly accessible, but adds an historical flavour. You will not regret reading this series - and I wait, with huge anticipation, the next volume.Read full review
