Useful for newly hatched and fairly small chicks but they loved it as it provides warmth from above and creates a safe place to hide (just like a broody hen would do). Easy to adjust the height and you just plug it in - Simples! The only negative point is that the chicks loved to jump up on it as well as shelter beneath it & to avoid the heating plate itself getting too dirty I had to cover it with some custom-cut lino, so it would be good if it came with a washable cover. Otherwise this is great & I'd personally recommend it over a overhead heat lamp.

This heater is not suitable for the chicks to actually touch the underside of the heater as suggested, as when I placed my hand on the plate it was too hot for me to keep my hand in place so this could burn the chicks head. I used it with the legs extended so high that the chicks could not touch the underside. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has one that is so hot.
