One of the most complete and accurate guides to British fungi. Very useful reference. (Always use books from reputable publishers to identify fungi, preferably check 2 or more books if intending to eat fungi)

I bought this guide because I take photos of fungi during autumn and it is notoriously difficult to identify them. Other fungi books are limited in species so I could never be sure of a correct identification. The Collins Guide is over 600 pages and has about 2600 British fungi species each with a colour painting showing the species' with their most identifiable traits. Unlike a photo which shows a single instance of a species this method shows the generic look which makes identification much easier. A book with, say, 150 species will simply not be useful for in-field identification. We need a full guide as there are many similar species. For someone wishing to pick fungi to eat this guide would be an essential book to own as there are many lookalikes to the edible fungi species, many which are very poisonous. If I had criticism of the Collins Fungi Guide it would be: 1) the bracket type of fungi images could be better. 2) the species text/description could be better laid out (although admittedly that would make the book larger). Overall a superb book for anyone interested in fungi and nature.Read full review
