At the grand old age of 41 Shaw, still playing veterans soccer, suffered a routine hip injury which required invasive surgey for a new hip. Shortly after the operation caused by a post operative blood clot he suffered a massive stroke leaving him with paralysis of the left side, loss of speech and partial blindness.
