About this product

Product Information

After the 1969 nationalisation, bus and coach companies had generally continued with their traditional liveries and, in 1971, it was decided the time had come to apply a corporate image to state-owned bus operations. The livery scheme would be a simplification of the colours previously used. The livery of a bus would be one colour all over, later relieved by a central 3-inch white line, and vehicles designated as dual purpose or 'Local Coach' would use the base colour on the lower half and white above. The 'dual purpose' vehicle could be a bus fitted with comfortable seats, an older coach no longer deemed suitable for full coach duties, or a new coach fitted with bus-style doors. With a wealth of previously unpublished images, Michael Hitchen looks at this interesting part of the NBC fleet as it journeyed between towns and cities across England and Wales, at a time when there was still plenty of variety and exceptions to the rule.

First printed in 2019, this is a new issue which provides a comprehensive overview of a range of vehicles that existed within the National Bus Company during the late 1970s and up to the mid eighties. Photographs are nicely reproduced with informative captions. They are not in any particular company order but show the variety of vehicles around the country which lost their cherished colours in favour of poppy red and white or grass green and white. They were supporting cast to the Leyland National, Bristol VR and Olympian which were the stars of the show and part of the standardised image that the NBC wished to portray. These vehicles have a fascination of their own, whilst undermining the standard image! Being dual purpose, neither coach or bus , they could turn up anywhere on all types of services standing in for more luxurious sisters or adding a touch of glamour to local services. Some had started as full coaches only in later life to be demoted from the front line to these niche duties. For those who thought the NBC was boring, look at this book and think again
