Product Information

How is it that our own minds can jeopardize our sanity? With the experience of her own periods of depression and a Masters degree from Oxford in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy to draw from, Ruby Wax explains how our busy, chattering, self-critical thoughts drive us to anxiety and stress. If we are to break the cycle, we need to understand how our brains work, rewire our thinking and find calm in a frenetic world. • Ruby’s Masterpiece.

I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with mental health problems, or as an insight for friends and family of anyone who has depression or anxiety. It is so very easy for us to get locked into a certain way of thinking about ourselves and to suffer from subsequent low self esteem adding to our anxieties. This book helped me to understand that I wasn’t a failure, rather just a bit broken and that I could help fix myself. I have to admit to being more interested in the science behind this rather than the mindfulness part. Who knew about neuroplasticity within the brain and how we can retrain our thoughts. I am 64 years of age and been prescribed antidepressants on and off since I was 17. With the help of this book and a lot of work on my own behalf, I came of medication well over a year ago and feel much better for it. I could not have done this without this book and not for one moment would I suggest anyone reading this review ought to attempt coming off their meds as even Ruby Wax admits she will always need medication. What I do know is that this book has truly been the catalyst for helping me turn my life around and for understanding some of the reasons I may have been the way I was. Not an easy journey folks but well worth the pain as I am now a much more relaxed and happier human being. I do have my odd moments still but they pass. I cannot recommend this book enough. It ought to be part of the school curriculum in my humble opinion. Good luck to anyone who reads the book and remember to take small steps at a time.

  • Wax does it again, explaining madness is her forte.

This is the second book in the series and even more informative than the first. Explaining mad, for all levels of mad and helping us to understand ourselves, whilst laughing 😀

  • Everyone should read!!

Whether you are coping with stress or not it is something we all have. ... good to see Ruby laugh at herself too. Don't we all need to laugh more .. especially at our own little (or big) quirks.
