Given that many scenes are filmed indoors with only candlelight available, it is a very dark film. The actors are excellent and the atmosphere is built up with tension and emotion palpable. Gradually, the story evolves and shows the family relationships between William Shakespeare, his wife Ann and their children. It is an interesting way to learn about the era and limited opportunities available to women then. The Question and Answer session with Kenneth Branagh is particularly revealing and gives a wonderful insight into the way he directed the film as well as starring in the main role as Shakespeare. Judi Dench is a memorable Ann (nee Hathaway). The quality of the costumes, make up and music are all amazing as also is the choice of locations and settings. A really memorable film.

This story explores a little know part of William Shakespeare's life, the latter years. A very thoughtful approach to his relationship with his wife Anne and daughters and the death of his son. There is still a lot unanswered regarding the "real"Shakespeare, but a good story, well worth a view.

For those who love Shakespeare, or Dame Judi Dench, or Ian McKellen, this is a must see. Lovely photography, lighting, soundtrack. The storyline takes a few twists, & maintains viewer interest. The recitation of Shakespeare is the finest ever seen. LOVE IT!
