Cannot Recommend - Causes Hum/Buzz/Ground Loop - Cheap but Not Worth It
Probably no fault of the seller, but this is very poorly designed.
I hope they see this though, so 1) they’ll stop selling this until issue is fixed,
2) improve or change design, or let manufacturer/supplier know of issue.
Yes, it's shielded, but this head shell was the culprit of a ground loop/hum/buzz in my set up, more details below.
While I appreciate that at this price, you get the metallic plate underneath the top of the head shell; it is not shielded where it needs to be. Or maybe, the plate is what is causing the hum/buzz?
I suspect it has something to do with how the p-mount is designed, and how close the cartridge wire sockets are to the rim of the bare metal socket? While obviously, all cartridge wires are plastic coated at the ends, somehow this design just doesn't work.
There is also no azimuth adjustment. However, when rotated with reasonable force, you can sort of "adjust" the azimuth because socket is almost free spinning. That's fine, maybe by design? I doubt it would stay in place with normal use though given how easy it is to rotate it.
Also while setting this up, I realise why other wooden head shells have a metal plate/bar on top of the head shell where the cartridge screws would be. I definitely overtightened it a bit as the screw bit into the wood.
Because of how chunky it is, I find it easier to screw tight.
I have a Nagaoka MP-500 that I've used since 2017, on a genuine Made in Japan Jelco HS-25BR. Zero problems, no ground loop, no hum, no buzz all these years.
After changing to an MC cart for a while, thought I'd set my MP-500 up again to compare; since I got this new wooden head shell, why not mount it on?
After setting everything up, I heard a horrible hum/buzz. Frantically, I tested everything until I isolated the problem to the most unexpected culprit, the head shell. While I am 100% sure it’s the head shell, I can only speculate which part of the head shell is causing this problem.
Took the cart off, mounted it on my trusty ol' Jelco HS-25BR once again, reset everything; hum/buzz was gone, hmm....
Test was conducted with the same MM phono stage I use with my MC cart, just without SUT. Same cables, same passive pre amp, headphone amp, same arrangement; again just without SUT.
While testing to verify source of problem, I even moved my PSU plugs all around just to make sure, no difference.
Would not recommend at all, in hindsight, total waste of time and money because I wanted a cheaper head shell. Other head shells are far more expensive for a reason.
