About this product

Product Information

Written by Naoki Higashida when he was only thirteen, this remarkable book provides rare insight into the often baffling behaviour of autistic children. Using a question and answer format, Naoki explains things like why he talks loudly or repeats the same questions, what causes him to have panic attacks, and why he likes to jump. He also shows the way he thinks and feels about his world - other people, nature, time and beauty, and himself. Abundantly proving that people with autism do possess imagination, humour and empathy, he also makes clear how badly they need our compassion, patience and understanding. David Mitchell and his wife have translated Naoki's book so that it might help others dealing with autism and generally illuminate a little-understood condition. It gives us an exceptional chance to enter the mind of another and see the world from a strange and fascinating perspective. The book also features eleven original illustrations, inspired by Naoki's words, by the artistic duo Kai and Sunny.

  • Anyone with any interest/involvement with autism should read this - and form their own opinion.

This is difficult to review - because it is about a world of experience that most people have no access to - including family and carers. However - it is a perspective from inside that different world. This is a good thing. We may begin to have some comprehension - at least of one person's experience. This is far, far better than "outsiders'" theorising - and way better than outsiders' opinionating. Add to the above - the introduction is extremely helpful in its own right. Key measure of how good I think this is - I give copies to people interested in autism - especially health workers.

  • A must read for anyone who wants to understand autism

A rare insight into autism from the perspective of an autistic boy. Very well written, a frank but positive explanation of the processes he must go through in order to carry out every day tasks. I couldn't put it down and recommend anyone who knows or cares for someone with autism read it.

  • insightful

Insightful revelations about the mind of an autistic person, great if you know someone like this. As a mother, it can make sad reading in parts, but good to have the knowledge in order to help and understand.

  • The Reason I Jump

Excellent book. I work with individuals on the autistic spectrum and this book gives a real insight into the challenges that people with autism face. It also has made me more aware of how best to support individuals and shift my way of thinking, I. e. I need to think outside the box more and be less "neurotypical" in my approach. This book is a must for everyone who knows/has contact with people on the autistic spectrum.
