Product Information
Set in the mid-War years on a vast Scottish country estate, Hugh Hudson's film, based on the real-life experiences of Denis Forman, former director of the Royal Opera House, conjures up both the idyll of the period, as the Great War recedes into memory and the darkness of cloying, almost incestuous family life. Robert Norman plays the ten-year-old son of family head Colin Firth, an inventor and investor in a moss farm (for medical use). Into his life comes Firth's brother (Malcolm McDowell) and his glamorous new wife (Irene Jacob), the former with a claim to the estate, the latter causing a rift between Firth and his brother. As Norman discovers the guilty secrets of his father's 'private' library, so the adults play out a poignant parallel drama of secret desires, both emotional and financial.Product Identifiers
