When the snow water had broken crevices open in the mountain a shot or even just a sharp cry was enough to tear loose a huge slab and send it toppling. Among these is Edvarda daughter of the wealthy local trader Herr Mack.

About this product

Product Information

Britain Begins is nothing less than the story of the origins of the British and the Irish peoples, from around 10,000BC to the eve of the Norman Conquest. Using the most up to date archaeological evidence together with new work on DNA and other scientific techniques which help us to trace the origins and movements of these early settlers, Barry Cunliffe offers a rich narrative account of the first islanders - who they were, where they came from, and how they interacted one with another. Underlying this narrative throughout is the story of the sea, which allowed the islanders and their continental neighbours to be in constant contact.

  • Good roundup from a good communicator.

This is a very good summary of the current thinking about Britain's past up to the Norman Conquest. Obviously, if you need an in-depth analysis you will need to use this volume only as a starter and then get into the bibliography. Cunliffe is always clear and has produced a stimulating set of arguments and a good range of maps, photos and examples of the subject in hand. If you only have one space for a volume of British prehistory and ancient history this is a useful one to fill that space. You may not always agree with the analysis given, but it will encourage you to dig deeper!
