  • Life in the ice

Set in an age of ice and written from the perspective of a "trainee" shaman (aged about 12 when the story begins). Sounds quite grungy, but I found it a compelling read. The people are real; they use their knowledge to cope with hunger and cold in a down-to-earth sort of way, and are sceptical that shamans have any special powers at all. Have a hot water bottle handy when you read the book - you'll feel the cold yourself.
