By Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Author Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Chapter 1 Costly Grace Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of our Church. Grace without price; grace without cost! The essence of grace, we suppose, is that the account has been paid in advance; and, because it has been paid, everything can be had for nothing.
Akthough it is 75 years since Bonhoeffer's execution/martyrdom, recent years have seen a growing interest in his writings. This book deals with Bonhoeffer's view of Christian discipleship, particularly his view of "cheap grace." I think Christians of every denomination/theological view, should read this book. So many branches of Christianity have made "believing" and "following" an easy thing without any personal cost. It is true that salvation is by grace alone and we contribute nothing, but taking up Jesus's yoke does involve personal cost.
