More of a prequel.
It is as gripping a read as "Northern Lights" and leaves you hanging and wondering where the second book will take you. "The Subtle Knife" did an enthralling change of characters.However it did feel like a prequel in some ways. No we know how Lyra gor her Golden Compass. I eagerly await the next book. Nice but...
It's an enjoyable addition to the Dark Materials canon, but i hadn't realised before purchase that it's a prequel. As such, there's only so much that can happen, given that we know everything that happens in the future. It's all very nice, but doesn't really add much. The one particularly interesting (brief) part for me seems to be set in kind of a different world. It's a bit mysterious. Otherwise it all just trundles along getting us a bit closer to the events we already know well...
