About this product

Product Information

Winner of the 1973 National Book Award, Gravity's Rainbow is a postmodern epic, a work as exhaustively significant to the second half of the twentieth century as Joyce's Ulysses was to the first. Its sprawling, encyclopedic narrative and penetrating analysis of the impact of technology on society make it an intellectual tour de force.

That this exists as an audiobook is amazing, however expensive also. If you are dedicated to getting the fullest essence of the book, this might be of some help in that the narration gives one a chance to experience a version of the author's voice. I got mine used from an ex-library materials seller online and saved a bit. Recommended for scholars and autodidacts like myself alike.

  • Difficult, but worth the effort.

I expected it to be good, so I can't give it a "better than expected" rating. The book itself is exceptional, and I've been a fan for many years. Hearing it read gives it an additional dimension. George Guidall is one of the best audio book readers, in my opinion, and as usual does an excellent job with what must have been a challenging assignment. Occasionally (and only occasionally) he interprets a passage differently than I would, but then that's probably why he's a professional reader and I'm not. Each of the 4 parts of the book is divided into many sections, and each new section might bear little or no relation to the one before it. In the book, these sections are separated by little squares. In the recording, one is followed by the next sometimes without even a pause, and this could be very disorienting to someone unfamiliar with the book. I think some kind of auditory cue between sections would help prevent confusion.
