It was Sunday morning and the pavements were splashed with colour: piles of fuchsia dragon fruit, ripe green mangoes, scented white lilies, juicy yellow pineapples. Women strolling in floral pyjamas added to the kaleidoscopic effect. Amidst it all, people slurped their morning bowls of pho and drank gritty black coffee. No one took the slightest bit of notice of a foreigner on a pink moped. In spring 2013, adventurer Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent saddled up alone on her pink Honda C90 moped and set off from the cacophonous streets of Hanoi. A motorcycling historical record.
The author rides a small motorbike along parts of the Hi Chi Minh Trail used by North Vietnam forces to win the Vietnam War despite incessant American bombing raids. At times relating sadness and dismay at the violence at the time of the war and subsequent destruction of the valuable forest, Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent relates her triumphs and joys coping with the motorcycle to make this journey.
