I use this for photographing birds when I need to get that bit closer on my 200-500 Nikon lens I am down to f8 that's what I would expect, so a sunny or bright day is needed. naturally you lose a bit of sharpness but not much ,a bit expensive but worth it.

TC's how good are they?
Any glass in front of your lens is going to alter the image, but I would say although they say "will work with certain zoom lenses" there is a price to pay, slow down with AF lock speed, and some loss of sharpness. A prime good (expensive) lens is the best way to get the "long" shot ( If you can afford it?)
