I found brother Ray's 'X-Ray' book difficult to read (and I'm his biggest fan) because it's written in the exceedingly irritating third person. Dave's autobiography, meanwhile, is a different proposition altogether. Apart from being graphic and a real eye opener on occasions, it is very entertaining, often humorous and goes into great detail, with particular reference to the performing rights, which I knew nothing about and found fascinating. The antics of The KinKs' management - what an incredible assortment of characters, by the way - is described with wit and great imagery. I have read thirty-odd biographies to date and this is by far the best; thoroughly entertaining, beautifully observed and well written.
