A young man living in a future where complacency is valued above all else discovers the sinister secrets that hold his fragile society together after being selected to become the Receiver of Memory in this adaptation of author Lois Lowry's Newbery Medal-winning young-adult novel. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) was raised to believe that conformity is the key to contentment. The society Jonas lives in is a peaceful one, in large part because their collective memories have been entrusted to the Giver (Jeff Bridges). A mysterious yet seemingly benevolent figure, the Giver is the sole guardian of the community's dark and hidden history. When that history is revealed to Jonas over the course of his illuminating sessions with the Giver, the young man learns that the wisdom he now holds could dictate the fate of the entire society. Later, as the weight of that responsibility becomes too great a burden for Jonas to bear, he realizes that his only hope of saving the ones he loves most is to flee. Unfortunately for Jonas and perhaps his entire world, every previous attempt to escape has ended in failure. Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgĺrd, and Katie Holmes star in a film from director Phillip Noyce (RABBIT-PROOF FENCE, THE QUIET AMERICAN).

The Giver; an engaging film that gives insight into the posibilities for mistakes in our future.
A systematic view of a utopian society that fails in normal human emotional behaviors. It shows how over regulation of life requirements by a handful of government leaders can overreach the levels of humanity in favor of homeostasis. Only the "Giver" of memories to a specially selected youth can hope for regeneration of normalcy in human life. The cast is well balanced and work well together to illuminate the failures of a utopian society. Scenery is well thought out, and also demonstrates what is missing in this future world. The script is well written and deserves praise for not overly pressing its message. The original book reading by the Bridges family in the special extras is well done, as it was primarily written for children.

Semi Entertaining with great actors
I hear the book is very different from the movie. My daughter wanted this because of a school project. She had to compare the movie to the book. Everyone seems to be in agreement that the book is much better. The movie, to me, was good but not great. I like Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. They both did a great job in the movie. If it were not for the school project, I would not have purchased this and possibly just waited to see it on television.
