About this product

Product Information

Young cadets at the Virginia Military Institute are forced to fight in the Civil War when President Lincoln gives orders to invade the Shenandoah Valley. With the nation divided in two, Lincoln realizes that his only hope for getting reelected is to turn the tides in favor of the Union. His solution: Command the General in Chief of Union Forces to seize the Shenandoah Valley. Under direct orders from General. Grant, German native General Hans Sigel prepares to lead his troops down the western side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Down below, spring is in full bloom, and the young cadets at VMI have yet to experience the war firsthand. With the Union army rapidly advancing and Confederate troops unable to rally their forces in time, the VMI superintendent volunteers the Corps of Cadets to defend the valley. Thus, the stage was set for the Battle of New Market, a defining fight in the Civil War, and one that would haunt the surviving cadets to their dying days. David Arquette, Lauren Holly, and Jason Isaacs star.

    Civil War Done Right

Field of Lost Shoes is based on the lives of several VMI cadets just prior to and during the American Civil War. The film examines the feelings of these young men during war time including slavery, their state of Virginia seceding from the Union, falling in love and eventually going into battle. The story was told with sympathy and feeling. For once the old Hollywood addage "Based on a True Story" was just that. The Battle of New Market also known as The Field of Lost Shoes saw the young VMI cadets called up to defend their beloved Shenandoah Valley from an invading army led by Union General Franz Siegel in 1864. Wary of sending the young men into combat, Confederate General Breckinridge soon had no choice but to do so. Although outnumbered the cadets rose to the occasion and won the day. Weaving in the annual VMI commemoration of the Battle of New Market was a nice touch. As the fallen soldiers names were called, an answer was received, "died on the field of honor, sir". The actors were all well chosen for their roles. David Arquette, Tom Skerritt, Keith David, Lauren Holly and Jason Isaacs all did an outstanding job. The story was compelling and timely as honor, committment and duty never go out of style. I would especially recommend this film to middle and high school teachers teaching the Civil War. Lee Joyner

About as entertaining as Brother Rat.

The rat part was foolish, First class cadets do not associate with rats nor do they spend much time pretending to be their friend. Rats live on the 4th stoop. The only time they really see upper class men is in company ranks. The General was too chummy with cadets, in real life, Breckenridge had his hands full with the battle coming! The real funny instance was omitted. It concerned a hungry cadet shouting to the General. Check out a real character: Daddy O

  • Movie Review - Field of Lost Shoes

Sir/M'am, This was an interesting movie about a heroic military action taken by the Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute VMI) during a tragic episode in American History. When these Cadets from VMI marched into battle during the American Civil War (aka the War of Northern Aggression) in defense of the State of Virginia, they also marched forever into the honored lore of their school and also into the hearts of the citizen's of their State. Respectfully, Wayne

  • GreatCivil War movie

I saw this movie when it is was first released. I live within 60 miles of VMI and have been there ,any times. Great movie, great history theme, the students back then were real patriots, it was wonderful knowing that kids were instilled with love of country/state/each other.

This is one great movie and documentary. Young men, boys really, who are dedicated to do their duty no matter what the price, even death. Compare their character with much of the youth today.
