Aquila Rubino Guitar Strings - Code 134C RED. This unique approach makes Aquila Rubino strings fully responsive throughout the entire range of the fretboard, especially over the 12th fret as the smaller gauge differences between strings allow an improved overall intonation.
These are remarkable guitar strings, by any reckoning. I'm still trying to assess whether they are a new ideal for my own guitars, but they are very different from conventional nylon strings or carbon strings and offer something new and very intriguing. The trebles are bright, loud and musical in ways that experience with other Aquila strings (eg. Alabastro) hadn't prepared me for. They bring a real zing to the guitar they are on (an older Hofner flamenco guitar). The basses are more puzzling still, being surprisingly thin in diameter and almost a little too thin for fingers used to clunky thick wound basses, but the sound is huge. The trebles and the basses look a little different, the basses being a surprisingly colourful red, but there's an excellent balance across the set which works particularly well on the narrowish nut of the guitar they are on - the thin diameter of the strings helps with the narrower string spacing. The overall sound is bright, loud and musical in ways that make me want to try the strings on all my guitars, even steel-string acoustics, so I only wish these strings were a little cheaper. From what I have read a modified version of the trebles, also made by Aquila, are part of the Martin Magnifico string set, and I might try those strings out at some point. But these Rubino strings do seem to be better in lots of ways than conventional nylon and carbon strings, and are vying, in my judgment, for the most innovative and persuasive string set currently available. There are lots of strings I haven't tried, that I'd like to compare, not least other Aquila variants, but these are really great strings well worth trying. I don't know how long they will remain full of vitality but over a week or so they seem to have improved rather than dulled and I'm hoping they will last a long time. The colour takes a bit of getting used to, but I've stopped wishing they looked more conventional.
These won't suit all guitars but they're perfect for mine, which has a deep, sonorous tone which can be muddy with the wrong strings. The trebles are bright but sweet, and the basses rich and deep. The best ever!
