    Inspired me to tidy

I read this book fully before starting to tidy. As with other reviews, I was surprised that pretty much everything was 'binned' in the book - no mention of recycling via Charity shops. I was inspired to sort my clothes and did get rid of many items, so it was worth getting from that point of view. Putting all like items together in one place before sorting is a really good idea. I haven't tried her folding technique and there are still many areas of my home that need attention, so I wouldn't say the book is compelling.

Basically she just chucks everything away

I don't get it. If you've got too much stuff, obviously get rid of some of it. I didn't need a book to tell me that, I needed it to tell me HOW to tidy. Apart from folding your clothes and putting them in the drawer vertically, this book doesn't excrete any gems. She also talks to her stuff before she throws it away, and repeats herself a lot. She's quite smug about the fact that she has chucked out all of her old photos, and implores you to do the same, along with old letters, cards, and other things of sentimental value. I wonder if she'll live to regret her recklessness.

  • permission to throw things away

It's odd, but this book has given me permission to throw away things I had held onto for years. It has changed my mindset to items and I got the 'it's served it's purpose, thank it for that and throw it away' philosophy. That's what I needed, the permission. Although I am still to start clear-out, I am planning to do it in the next couple of weeks when I have a few days to spare, and I'm looking forward to it. But already I have shredded so much paperwork I was holding onto (for what?) that my wheely bin is 2/3 full of it! This book will work for some, but maybe not everyone. But for the cost of a book, that could be sold on after you have read it, it might be worth a try.

  • Surprised!!

I was dubious about the claims of this book but due to the rave reviews I bought a copy for myself and one for a friend. It's easy to read and makes so much sense - it makes big claims but I can actually see this book changing my life! No fuss, simple yet effective. Highly recommended.

  • Excellent so far I have just started it but seems very readable and as suggested potentially life changing.

Excellent so far. Has been highly recommended to me by many people and Certainly so far would do the same. It clarifies causes and offers clear solutions. This is Marie's life work and is invaluable. Not just an ordinary book I would say get it and try it for yourself.

  • Thankfullness and joy of tidying

An easy read and well thought out and translated into English. Marie's thoughts are arrived at - and explained = after many 'soul searchings' from her childhood. It is a spiritual book and is inspiring. Things that don;t 'spark joy' are thanked and parted with. There is an honouring for all things that have been part of one's life. It doesn't feel that things are being ripped away but are part of a life process of growth and serenity. It is working for me! I don't feel that I am being made 'to jump to it soldier' but rather it is inner work with an outer sign becoming apparent.

  • Discarding and decluttering.

Having emptied relatives houses following their passing, I realised I was in danger of hoarding half of their things as well as my own. I needed help. Reading this book has helped no end. I am only half way through the book but already it has made a difference I have been sorting, clearing and shredding ever since. It won't happen overnight, but it has made a vast difference in the way I think about possessions. Excellent. One of the best self-help books I have ever purchased. Can recommend. Good luck.

  • addictive

this book was recommended to me because i'm a hoarder and my house was getting me down, once i'd started the book i couldn't wait to finish and get started. i've only done my clothes and underwear so far and i'm hooked. i keep going back and opening my wardrobes and drawers and smiling, wish i had a holiday so i could go full on it's going to have to be weekends. so far i've sent 3 bin bags full to charity, 2 to the tip and i've got another 2 to sell.

  • Life changing book

I was a very messy person before reading it, but this book teaches you respect towards your belongings and yourself. I never thought I'd want to be a tidy person, but after applying Marie's methods, it's hard not to be, and it's so easy...
