Brilliant Story
I couldn't get over the brilliance of the story and art of this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end with a compelling story about Rabbit trying to get a nap. The highs and lows will fill you with a rollercoaster of emotions. Features a cameo from Bear and Fox as well as new character tortoise who steals every scene he appears in and surely deserves a spin-off. You feel for Rabbit's problems and woes on a deep and sympatico level and not to spoil the ending but when Rabbit finally is able to sleep it is a truly life affirming and satisfying ending. It's easy to read into the story as a parallel to the hectic but monotonous rigors of modern life but I believe the story is meant to be read more as a simple story of diversity and the challenges of needing to find somewhere nice to go to sleep. The story isn't without its questions. Why did Rabbit have Bear come around to fix her shutters if she was intending to sleep? Why didn't she just go to sleep in the bed in first place? Why were the Mice in her cupboard? Do they live there? Do they sublet? Are they squatting? But you can argue that the questions actually add to the mystique and intrigue behind the story. I wouldn't say this was the best book in the Tales From Acorn Wood series but it is very difficult to beat the modern masterpiece that is Fox's Socks; an incredible tale about a Fox and his Mouse Wife getting ready to go to a wedding which surely stands shoulder to shoulder with the greatest literary masterpieces of modern literature.
